a) "Dumb" means "lacking the power of speech".

Your usage here might be acceptable in informal speech jb. But included in an attempt to correct an alleged linguistic transgression is inappropriate.
c) This impeaches your credibility to make such pronouncements as:

I didn't enter Germany until late 1973; significantly less time ago than the half century figure you cite. Therefore, among your numerous other errors here, your time frame is over a decade off.

If my spelling is in error, I attribute it to a combination of decades of intervening time for memory to fade, in combination with relative disinterest. It was a casual example, not a formal manifesto. But if your post is intended as a correction of spelling, I thank you for the correction.
But even if there was a spelling error (was there?) that's what the signs said. So if there's any "army-base pidgin" involved, you attack the messenger, while leaving the message unindicted.

My experience was in Germany.
I never asserted it would please a whining purist such as yourself, nor did I originally assert it was substantially in Bavaria.

A) The dictionary says I used the right word. Get over it.
B) The following quoted sentence seems to be taken from the paragraph which evidently has so infuriated you.

Please note the conspicuous absence of castigation or condemnation in my benevolent suggestion to Jeff.
Contrast that to the obvious hostility of your own substantial over-reaction.


* This I can understand. The disproportion of this over-reaction clearly indicates I've metaphorically picked a scab here; opened an old and very tender wound; not intentionally of course.
But we demonstrate our character by how we respond to such petty annoyances.
Therefore jb, your attempt to render sear the gibbet of catharsis conclusively demonstrates a deficiency far greater than any attributed to sear here.

If you have this much hostility over such a trivial transgression, it indicates a significant reservoir of underlying resentment which is toxic to you.
But if you are willing to do the work, psychiatric counseling might prove very therapeutic for you.

"Um-pa" band is a term I've heard in this context for decades.
I don't use the term as much as I use "polka". The former is a bit too onomatopoetic for me ("pidgin" in jb's parlance). And on an English language BBS, the term "boarische" which jb prefers is simply not likely to be as familiar as "polka". It's not clear to me whether he's aware of that, or not.
But linguistic correction is clearly not his primary agenda here.
Lifting ones self up by putting others down is classic evidence of underlying unresolved emotional issues. Striking out in destructive effort to accomplish something constructive is an obvious contradiction. To most that would care to observe, it's obviously counterproductive. The exception is illustrated by the difference between "perception" (how others perceive us), and "self-perception" (how we perceive ourselves).

In addition, while I visited Bavaria (and even drove a BMW Bavaria) I did not hold permanent residence in Bavaria.
Therefore even if true, the relevance (if any) of jb's point regarding Bavarian "volksmusic" escapes me. I spent most of my time in Germany north of Munich.
