Miss Mexico had to change her outfit for the regional dress contest because of the violence depicted on her outfit. (see link) And Mexicans were booing Miss USA because of "what they saw as U.S. unfriendliness toward illegal immigrants." And protesters: "This year, it attracted protesters wearing white dresses splashed with fake blood and sashes proclaiming "Miss Juarez," "Miss Atenco" and "Miss Michoacan" in reference to places in Mexico made infamous by killings or sexual abuse of women." Could be considered the male equivalent. We will have beauty in the world. It should be celebrated. Whatever form it takes. Personally, I don't watch them - too much fluff. But people obviously get something from them. We have ongoing beauty contests with Hollywood celebs et al. Their beauty also celebrated, just in a different way, and far better rewarded. Life is about contrasts. The contrasts are what makes it colourful. Everybody has a bright colour they can do something with. If we didn't celebrate the bright colours, then what would there be to look forward to. For some, their bright colour is an ability to make money. For others, a gift with music. Everybody has some gift, beauty is no exception.

I've heard it said that beauty pageants are demeaning toward women. Personally I find them more demeaning to the bimbos who take part. They are also poor entertainment.

In a way I think of it as exploitation of women. Most of these women start out in little girl beauty contests, where they are made up to look like miniature adult women. I stopped watching them long before the Jon Bonnet issue, but that is a for instance of why. No women I considered the most beautiful would even make it to the finals. These days they're all unnatural looking, too bony and wear way too much make-up. Personally I'd be inclined to watch a handsome hunk contest!

I think there are far better ways to exploit scantily clad beauties like that, than parading them about in public. But if they'd like to strut around like that at my house, running the vacuum and preparing potato salad; I could deal with that. Someday this is going to be my sig-line.

And if it is degrading, then why not change it to not be? Have the ladies come out wearing pocket protectors. And what happened to quality programing like that Beauty and the Geek show? Why was it always women who were the beauties and the men who were the geeks? The other way around would have been interesting.

It's not my thesis. But it's an easy argument to make. Until the PC crowd showed up (& perhaps even after), they were called "beauty pageants". Judging human beings substantially on their physical attributes implies such a thing is appropriate. It suggests young women are valued most for being attractive, and not for finding a better treatment for poison ivy, or teaching math, or working in the Peace Corps. It is an indictment not of the women participants, but of the pageant sponsors and supporters; & on broader scope, the society that indulges them. How'd I do? Someday this is going to be my sig-line.
