We have become a semi-literate society and beyond our specific, job related knowledge, we are not too educated either. Any wonder why?

I wonder if that's really true. My grandparents immigrated to the US in 1910. They were basically illiterate. Now their grandchildren all have college degrees. Some of us have Masters and PhD's.
If the data were available,I would guess that the population in general is much more educated and well-read today than 100 years ago. Look how many people use the internet. To use the internet one must be able to read. |

Well, certainly more people go to college/university these days and literacy rates are higher than in days past. However as a University employee myself, I find that many of the kids there these days are not literate past an 8th grade level or worse. It was gut wrenching to tutor them in remedial English just so they could be prepared for college level courses. You would be amazed.
As for the net, folks who we see at DB's like this seems to be better educated and informed as a whole. One regains a little faith that we might still have a civil society when browsing through places like P&P. Unfortunately, I fear most net usage consists of not much more than MySpace, Facebook, and IM's For too many people, reading for knowledge or pleasure seems to be falling to the wayside, history seems to began only the day a person was born, and many people cannot even find the US on a map. I kid you not. Ive seen it first hand. To me, civilization is a very thin veneer and we must fight to keep it. I hope that I am overly pessimistic. |

Is that a link to the story about the man who set the books on fire?

Newspaper subscriptions and sales have dropped precipitously in recent years, precisely because people claim to get their news online. Yet surveys have shown that most people don't like to read long stories or articles over the internet unless they are work related and they have to. I think we are seeing a small group of people who are getting a lot of detailed information, and a large group of people who are getting little.
