Oddly enough, oil has been pretty stable at $58-61 for quite a while now. One more big draw Wednesday morning might finally knock it loose.
I've been predicting energy shortage since 2002. (Made a lot of money that way last year, not so much so far this one.) The market is getting tighter, as production seems to be peaking & demand still rising. BUT By 2008 there is a high chance that a major recession hits, so it's not inevitable that we be at $90. $90 is a good low to mid-range guess; there are a lot of scenarios that blow right past $100 & into panic time. |

Fuel costs go up, those who want more efficiency will make it happen. 5 years ago i was driving an average of 12k/yr. I have cut that to less than 5k/yr. I pay less today than I did then to drive where I need to go. Did the same with heating my home by lowering temp on thermostat, changing to efficient lightbulbs, turning off appliances/lights not being used. I pay less now than 5 years ago on all my energy needs thru efficient use, while energy prices have soared. So, why can't everyone who cares do the same?

It sounds like you've gone from living at 30 times the sustainable rate to about 18. Pretty good; but long term (maybe 10 years) the whole private car/big house model will start breaking down.

What do you base the above statements on? Hopefully, something more than a Mensa card and just because. |

Keep an eye on the Russians. IMO, enjoy the cheap prices while they last. It will not be for long.

Not to worry. Those who don't like it can go back to living in caves.

You can test out your own sustainability number at www.earthday.net/footprint/index.asp
It could be way off, but its still kind of fun. |

I took the test. As I thought, the world is way over populated. It wasn't so bad when I was born.

The oil market has become more seasonal as its gotten tighter.
It's Spring, & sure enough, gasoline is rising again. Wholesale hit $2.07 today, which translates to $2.80 retail in a few weeks. Last year we hit $3 with no storms, no new wars, & no major outages. This year, $4 looks easily doable. |

Wow, we're almost at $3.00. That really snuck up on me.

I can't believe that I thought oil prices would continue to go down as they did earlier this year. Did I forget where that oil comes from!?!?

So far the tops this year are $3.23 retail gasoline, $78 WTI, and both have fallen back a bit.
No hurricanes yet. Mexico just admitted they can't keep producing much longer. |
