Not intending to do the math myself, I will for the moment take Jonah Goldberg at his word that the entire population of the world could be housed inside Texas. That being the case, it is ridiculous to say with a straight face that the world is over populated.

You could fit the world population into Texas, giving all of them a square of land 33' to the side, according to my math; though there's the issue of support structures, roads, enough farms to feed them all, energy to bring the food from the farmlands, etc etc.

and that is the exact point of this thread. Do we want another 100 million americans. It comes to a point that all the people to take care of, the quality of life reaches the african model or indian model.
Even if this world could support 20 billion, would we want to? What would be the lifestyle of it's inhabitants? It depends if you want quantity instead of quantity for your grandchildren. allan |

Suburbs are cities attached to a bigger city.
Exurbs are places that pretend to not be city but have no agriculture, just waste of land. |

Downpuppy, are you telling me I am a waste of land? If I did not occupy it, who would.

Overpopulation is real and the people are exhausting the planet's resources. How can anybody pretend otherwise? Interestingly, when a culture is more advanced, the families have less children.

Ya, Malthues was predicting our imminent demise about two hundred years ago, we must be due. But really, as far as resources go, its capitalism and not population that is the problem.

Quote: He he he , you sure do entertain me duke. Without capitalism, there would be no goods to fight over!!!!! It population silly. Even you must be able to see the problem with waste in a 400/500 million people USA, or a 14 billion earth population. I guess the question is, do you want quality or quantity for your grandchildren? allan |

Re: Not kidding | ||
Quote: IT is really not the resources so much as the waste products. Do you think with a world population of 1 billion in stead of 6 billlion there would be global warming, unless it is a natural cycle, then it does not matter 100 humans or 100 billion. Second, it does make sense that we would have less babies as our population became very healthy. Nature tends to adjust mankind, like every other creature, to the circumstances. In a small pond, the fish grow much smaller than in a large pond. Same exact effect. Chinese/japanese suffered such fate too!. Allan |
