I am not sure if that 20x multiplier is correct since our own modest home consumes about $2K of energy IIRC. But regardless, shouldn't Mr. Gore set a better example? Is it cold as a witches nose there? What are the weather extremes? Is that average in the world? Or average in North America? Or average in the US? Are you always tricked so easily? The average home in China doesn't consume electricity for at least 8 hours a day because it is shut off in many areas. In other large Asian locales, it could be more. And they don't have large power consuming devices, either. So what bridge would you like to buy? Jeff

Consummption does NOT go up linearly with area. In other words, a 10,000 square foot house does not consume 5 times the energy as a 2,000 square foot house. I am not sure if it is proportional to the square of the difference in area or not, but if it is, then the ratio of 10,000 to 2,000 is 5, which squared is 25 times the energy consumptions. All other things being equal, and if heating and cooling were the ONLY use of energy in the home, I would expect the Gore residence to consume 25 times the energy. As other things are roughly equivalent as compared to a smaller home, such as major hitter appliances like refrigerators, dryers, washers, entertainment centers. Hence, the 25 times is reduced, on average, to 20. This is quite believable, and they are making a mountain out of a molehill. But I do not know the typical ratio of increased heating/cooling losses to floor area. I will see if I can figure something out. Jeff

If he wants a big @#%$ mansion then it's his business. He'll use up a bunch of energy because he can afford the big @#%$ mansion that uses all that energy. Then he'll come out and complain about people who have big @#%$ SUVs that guzzle gas even though they can afford the gas guzzling SUV. It does come off hypocritical and that's what people see. IT soes not change the fact that global warming is a problem, but is being used as a means to distract from that message. This technique is called the red herring. It is fallaacious reasoning. His biggest environmental sin is having a whole mess of children. With overpopulation, all solutions fall apart pretty quickly. A ggod measure of the fakeness of politics is that the silly house thing gets promoted while the real one is ignored. He's also kind of an optimist, devoted to solutions that will let us maintain the American Way of Life. As good as that has been, its nearly over. Our easy motoring nirvana isn't going to last once oil production starts its inevitable decline, all the faster since we're deeply in hock to countries like China & Japan that have their own more pressing energy needs. No matter how many minor alternatives we promote.

So when somebody brings up the war in Iraq then they can't use some red herring statements like, "I bet they didn't send their kids over."
