Why should the US transfer nuclear technology to allied ornot even allied countries like India? Doesn't this send the wrong message on non-proliferation?

I think India, Pakistan and Israel with nukes is more unsettling than the prospect of Iran getting them. I suppose Pakistan is the US's biggest ally against terrorism. I don't know about India, they are moving away from Socialism and becoming an increasingly trade partner.

I agree with some of that. Actually, I would still find an Iranian bomb to be much more unsettling. Regardless, providing nuclear technology to ANY country is counter-productive in both the short run and the long run. I am at a loss as to why this would be done now or at any time in the past. Lifting sanctions on India and Pakistan was a mistake: it sent the wrong signal out to the rest of the world.
