Do the words "humanatarian" and "socialism" become intertwined/confused?
I fail to understand a society that turns its back on those in need..... This so goes in direct opposite of the so called "christian" nation we bill ourselves to be about. Look to the "school lunch" programs, the number of kids that qualify. All the children that live below the poverty line/level in this country. It says something about us, no? LoTD

Quote:No, socialism in this content means helping poor through government, humanatarian just means helping poor. And since we know how good government is at everything... Quote:You are overlooking people who work off the books and cheat on taxes. Now their children are able to have free lunches in schools too. What a reward. And don't bother arguing, it is a fact that most poor in America is fat. Fat doesn't happen to people who cannot afford food. Another thing that you're overlooking is a federal foodstamps program. Well, if you qualify for foodstamps you also qualify for free lunch at school, but guess what? They don't subtract those free lunches from your next food stamp allotment, thus people with food stamps who have children are able to spend their foodstamps on other things. All at tax payor expense. Also, you are allowed to use foodstamps at fast food restaurants such as McDonald's. Well guess what? For the price of going out for a family of four and eating at McDonalds, the same family can have a few diners at home. But, what the heck it's just tax payer money and noone would care. Majority of people would be better off without goverment interfarance. |

I think people must realize that the government is there to serve them and not the other way around. Less fortunate people must be helped but not pampered for life and it is just a temporary assistance by the community to help them. My taxes I am willing to give to help people who cannot help themselves and also I do my own community service in a shift that is unpaid. I think that charity work must be not enforced but established by the government and proffessionals make a decisions how to help people constructively to help themselves.
MLEVIN1220: Quote: I couldn't agree more on what else can be spent but I think that foodstamps is nessisary in some cases for basics and I think soup kitchens are needed to make good measures for people who can't eat. Quote: Fat is not a question about how much you eat it is more to do with how much calories and excercise a person makes. In Jordan many families are poor but imagine that one liter of Coca Cola is cheaper than one liter of orange juice! Even I find this outragous. Also another problem is people eat too much bread as a substitute for proper food and because bread has much calories more for 100 grams of bread than 100 grams of 'freedom fries' it doesn't harm you if you are active person but if you are not then it is just as bad. People who are poor I discovered in Jordan are usually also very overweight and surprizingly to some people are not as overweight. What also happens is very poor families get allowances. For example one kilogram of bread costs 21 cents and they get as little as $35 to go buy food and 'basics' since the only thing that is price controled is white bread (the kind I don't even eat) and they spend money unwisely and don't do enough to make themselves fit. ![]() |

Quote:And you think those free lunches are healthy? Or do you think no recess in public schools is healthy? In either case, proponents of free lunch at school are concerned about children not getting enough to eat, that automatically indicates not enough calories. |

I fail to understand a society that turns its back on those in need
I think that what you fail to understand is the difference of need and want/desire. When people purposely avoid work because they choose to get financing of their live thru gubmnt, because they know they can, they are getting what they want and not what they need. What far too many really need is a swift kick. This so goes in direct opposite of the so called "christian" nation we bill ourselves to be about. You seem to be obsessed with Christians. Why do you hate them so? Fat doesn't happen to people who cannot afford food. Nor does being able to buy a case of Michelob when they are paying for the steak and shrimp with food stamps. I think people must realize that the government is there to serve them and not the other way around It is there to serve a nation as a whole, to benefit everyone from the taxes they pay. It isnt their to redistribute wealth because some are too lazy to accumulate their own. That you have no problem with welfare programs you gubmnt spends on those who could be working doesnt mean everyone should follow your lead. If you thought jumping off a cliff was a good idea, how many do you think would follow you? That is the way I look at the grand picture of socialism. It is bankrupting many countries while the so-called needy numbers continue to increase due to lack of incentive to support themselves. I think soup kitchens are needed to make good measures for people who can't eat. And who pays for soup kitchens? Charities do. They volunteer their time and money of those who wish to donate to such causes. They dont rob/tax those who have to give it away to someone else. Huge difference in philosophy which some cant seem to grasp. As for food stamp programs, I would be all for giving away basic free food to those who need it. No frills, no stamps, no cheating. I was raised on milk (often powdered) and oatmeal for breakfast. Inexpensive meat and potatoes, rice, pasta and beans (the kind that require cooking - not the instant stuff) for dinner. Mostly peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch with an occasional bologna or tuna for variety. No welfare involved. 2 parents who didnt make much put it on the table and we were happy to get it. Few people were fat, everyone exercised. It was mandatory in school. Today it is a joke if it exists at all in schools. Lazy parents create lazy children and the cycle continues. Not the gubmnts job to support them. It is the gubmnts job to put physical back into education and require it if it has a job to do anything in that regard. |

Quote: No, I understand quite well. You keep presenting/protraying those receiving assistance as lazy...so where is the data/info backing up your statement? How many are truly underserving as you state? How long do most people stay on the welfare rolls? How many kids in this country live below the poverty level and why? |

Re: Lazy.... | ||

well the first thing is to get rid of the illegal aliens (no they are not illegal immigrants or undocumented workers, they are illegal aliens) come over here and "steal" the job americans wont do, and now make up 25% of the welfare rolls. And they only represent 3% of the population
Second, I have no problems with charities, but the FORCE part of my money paid in taxes is the part I hate. FORCE to pay for those who will not pay for themselves, and they are not even US citizens, and in fact, are invaders. We need to get rid of the illegals, and force lazy americans to EARN the welfare they get. And charities are the form of welfare we need. Then those who give, can tell those who take, what they expect, or they will give to other who will. I don't have a problem with welfare per sey, but according to the governments own figures, 74 cent out of every dollar given to welfare pays for distribution, the recipients only get 26 cents of every welfare dollar you pay in BY FORCE. Lets make most taxes voluntary. If you want to give to welfare, you tax YOURSELF. If americans are such a giving people, the lack of FORCE should be no problem. A tax system that is voluntary means that if it is not spent right, people will not give. This allows the people to drive the taxes, and gets rid of pork, and if it is not done right, the people will pull the cash. allan |

LOL So tell us exactly why taxpayers should fund a program to feed kids expensive crappy food? As for the numbers of who are lazy and who are truly in need, that is something you dogooders should be investigating/auditing instead of believing your own babble. If you did and actually got the $ going to those who need it instead ofthe lazy who abuse the system, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Justify you theft of my money for your "good" deeds. No one here has said that their are not needy people in the world. What we have said is that far too many are abusing the system and that some of you seem to have no problem with that or wasting other peoples money to pay for that abuse. That makes you part of the problem. |

The very fact that there's even a controversy about it is reason enough to question the premise of our socialist government programs.
These progressive & excessive government intrusions not only render Americans less charitable in character. It breaks up families. Thereby, it not only helps disconnect us from our neighbors. It even helps disconnect us from our own kin. |

You obviously weren't there Hard enuff....question just how hard luck your hard luck story is.
