Duke, your argument is true if the only possibility is that they (religious ideas) are nothing more than that, ideas. Then yes, how can you misrepresent a fairytale.
To my thinking, the question of god is like trying to pull back the curtain on the Wizard of Oz. Religion tries to guess who and what god is and then tells you that their representation is accurate, or more accurate than the other religions. The same is true of religious ideas about what happens when you die.
Many will have a prophet or saviour who will shed light on these things, but even if there is some truth in what those persons revealed, those revelations have long since been re-engineered by people to suit their need to exert influence and power.
If you see things from the point of view that there might indeed be something which approximates a god, then it quickly follows that that god will have been misrepresented in the way that humans readily do.
