The History Channel is running a program tonight Neanderthal v. Cromagnon. Supposedly the Cromagnons were better runners because they had a narrower pelvis than the Neanderthals did.
I could see where having a wider pelvis may help you spread out your body mass and this would make it easier for you to walk through deep snow (and apparently Neanderthals lived during an ice age).
But, if you have to hunt large animals to have food to eat and hunting these animals requires you to do a lot of running (either to the animals to catch them, or from the animals if you miss), what good is a wide pelvis? What on earth was Darwin thinking?
Also, Cromagnons were supposed to have larger brains than the Neanderthals did. But yet isn't all of the cave art in Europe attributed to the Neanderthals? If Cromagnon had greater brain capacity, where is their art? Let me guess, they couldn't afford insurance and Geico canceled their policies.
And this program started out by saying that all of the Neanderthal and Cromagnon (if I heard right) fossils would fit in the back of a pick-up truck. Is it wise to spin elaborate theories about these people on the basis of so little fossil evidence?
