Well it's interesting IR I was just having this discussion Last night. My freind was putting up a reasonable argument that at a minimum we could loose several Nuclear Aircraft carriers and maybe all the Boomers. They are a huge chunk of the budget.

As a known +%!+ crazed, socialist, traitor, one would expect me to agree with him, but I did not and here is why.

George Bush Junior (may he rot in hell) if nothing else managed to demonstrate amply that the ground force component of our military is badly broken. We are no longer in the position of being able to tell a third world, pack, of mud hut dwelling, peons to roll over and play dead and expect them to comply.

The ground force component of a military is by far the easiest to maintain and ramp up in time of need. You can actually stay something close to a democracy, sweep the gutters and put warm bodies in the trenches. As inefficient as it might be you can actually dragoon a herd of illegal aliens give them surplus garrands then ship them someplace to pot click talkers (Why Didn't we do it?). Heck you don't even have to care much about the Friendly body count if the bags are going to Mexico.

OTH I'm wild guessing that even the guy that mops the deck on the "Ronald Reagen" has to know enough to not press a button by accident that blows the thing up turning San Diego in to a radiation hot spot (TJ of course is different kettle of fish.) Sadly such men are not trained over night in time of need. Think about the last time they creatively dicked up your order at Taco Bell and decide for your self if we have a vast reservoir of technically savvy potential recruits?

So My thought is that given the native stupidity of the American voter. We can not count on the idea that we will not have future Presidents that given a small enough military, won't be dumb enough to pick a fight with somebody that could actually take us out. We always want to be in the position of the only guy that is taking the gun to the knife fight. If we need to save money let's do it by taking brain dead, crack babies of Medi/Medi.
