For farious unexplaned reasons teh US never had constructed a functional inline engine, where other nations did, especially Germany. This may tell something about phylosophy, but also about strategy, since the more simple construction of a radial engine is easier to maintain, due to is often exposed components, which can be maintained simple and effective, where the more compact, but often more powerfull inline engine is more difficult to maintain, due to its more internal structures.

US engines were good, as long as they worked, but were not the most reliable, since the large open space around the engine itself was vulnerable to influence from outside, either elements or (weapons)fire The more compact Inline engine lacked this, but had to be colled by liquid rather than air, forcing it to addapt a liquidcoolantsystem to be part of the structure. The advances of this were a better performance in all sorts of climates and temperatures, where the radial engine was better in warmer climates than in arctic enviroments. Even today the most commonly used sort of pisonengine is the inline machine, making the radial a thing of the past, telling quite a lot about what engine is more succesfull.

Strangely even in the modern world, US build engines are often quite heavy and have a negative power to weight ratio compared to Japanese and European enginmanufacturers, who ofthe want the least weight, but the most powerfull output. (Just compare a standard US build car with a simmilar type build in either Japan (and other East Asian countries) and Europe.)

That is completely known to me and not something I critisize. It was just an observation, given the more political influenced European automobile industry, with lots of enviromental restricted and related laws and so on ordered to this industry, while the more freely operated nonrestricted US carindustry can avoid this in the States,m making their products cheaper, due to lack of extra taxes. (It is a shame this same policy is not here as well, since ownership of a car here in Europe is very, very expensive, compared to in the USA.)

I am not a very good cartechnicien, nor a user of the automobile. (Traveling by car here in the Netherlands is a complete dissaster, with trafficjams all day long in the part I live in.) I am an occasional carprogramwatcher for interesting new issues, but nothing more than that. Perhaps a more specialized enthousiast can start a topic on this issue.

Persomally I use public transport, which is very developed here to compensate the trafficinfarct of every day.
